“Photography that captures you and the essence of you, rather than just technical perfection which just captures your image but not who you are and what is really you”.
Over the years I have had my photograph taken by many different people at different times and locations, with different levels of skill, different qualities of camera equipment, professional, semi-professional, and amateur.
With very few of the photographs that have been taken I have been pleased with, enthralled with, or excited over. At first I thought it was just my perception of how I appeared to other people but this was not so. Then I started thinking about who had taken the pictures and why they had taken them. In most cases where I was pleased with the photograph that was taken was when the photographer was a friend or had established a rapport with me before the shoot, it was only in the photographs taken by people who had taken time to get to know me, even if only a little, were the photographs in my opinion, a true reflection of who I am or who I was at the time the photograph was taken. For the most part I have been disatisfied with the images that have been captured by professional studios, although they may have won awards for their technical excellence, their photographs have been almost sterile from the essence of their subjects, although technically outstanding.
With this experience and knowledge I approach photography in a far more human way, technical excellence is important but I would rather capture the essence of the person than capture a lifeless flat image. I hope very much that you would prefer a photograph that is of you rather than just an image without life.
